Register for the July 1st Fun Run

Posted by on Jun 19, 2017 in Announcements | 0 comments

SVTS and SVYCC are partnering to offer a new event on Canada Day – the July 1st 5km Fun Run. The event is a fundraiser for the trail society but also hopefully just a great time for the community at large. This is not a race, there will be no timing, just a chance to get out as a group and enjoy some of the amazing things Salmo has to offer. We will start at the SVYCC at 8am, run over to, and around, the new lookout trail and on the return head across the new 6th Street bridge.

As an SVTS event you need to be a member to participate for insurance purposes and then registration is $10. All participants will receive a goodie bag and post run snacks plus we have great prizes from Gericks Trail, Dragonfly Cafe, Gypsywagon Catering and more. There will be a mini aid station at the trailhead with water, first aid and a cheering squad! As always, membership is by donation and can be done at the Hemlock Hub, via email or even snail mail. Event registration in advance can also be done at Hemlock Hub or via email or on the morning of the event from 7:20am – 7:50am. All ages welcome! Run or walk or bike to the trail head, hike the trail, and bike back. Whatever works for you!

Trail Crew Update

Posted by on Jun 12, 2017 in Announcements | 0 comments

The trail crew is finishing up on the first phase of the lookout hiking trail – a 1.5km loop on the bluffs above Delaurentis and Airport Road. Don’t let the short distance fool you, the trail has you working hard with the reward of great views. We will be doing a ‘grand opening’ hike with students from Salmo Secondary on June 21st. All are welcome with more details to come. A 0.5km out and back section to a further lookout will be added in the fall but at this stage the crew will be heading over to the ski hill to work on the next section of Inducer. Stay up to date with the crews progress on our Facebook page.

New Trails this Summer

Posted by on May 1, 2017 in Announcements, Upcoming Projects | 0 comments

After seven months of planning, partnering, grant writing, provincial permit applications and nail biting the pieces have finally come together for us to operate a paid trail crew for this summer. Salmo local Randy Boardman won the trail construction manager position and we are busy with the hiring of our four trail crew members. The crew will be in place and ready to work for May 3rd with some of the crew working into September.

We have received a total of $96,000 of funding from three grants – BC Rural Dividend Program, Columbia Basin Trust Recreation Infrastructure Grants and Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust. Grant applications included partnerships with the Village of Salmo and Kootenay Mountaineering Club. With the funding we will be able to be move forward with a number of new trails (about more 13km!) and restoration on some existing trails to better serve our community, neighbours and visitors. Details of all the projects will be up on our website www.salmovalleytrailsociety.org

People are already talking about our first project, an intermediate hiking trail on the bluffs above Delaurentis and Airport Road. In our 2015 ski hill survey many people wanted a Pulpit Rock (Nelson) and Bluffs (Trail) style option and this location will be perfect for that. The loop portion of the trail is 1.5km with another 0.5km up to an amazing lookout point. From there the crew will move on to the Salmo Ski Hill, to further expand the biking and hiking options, and then up to the Salmo-Creston highway where they will be reclaiming a trail to the top of Lost Mountain. We also hope to have time to restore the bridges on the trail to Panther Lake and are in discussions with BC Parks for a short nature trail at Erie Provincial Park.
